screw up your whole day...

Greetings from the Hayward Fault Line

I tend to think that Earthquakes are nature's way of reminding us that, in spite of our technology, we are not in charge here on this earth. Rather we are just along for the ride, at times an E ticket ride at that.

picture of Cypress structureWe live in San Lorenzo, which is about 4 miles from the Hayward fault. After the Loma Prieta quake a lot of real valuable information became public about soil stability in the bay area. It was no great comfort to me to find that our little neigborhood is in one of those red zones on the soil maps. We are on what used to be the mud flats of the San Francisco Bay.

Amazingly we rode out the Loma Prieta quake with no damage. Of course the epicenter was about 50 miles away too. All these pictures are of the Loma quake damage in Oakland

It took about a month before the personal earthquakes stopped (that's when you could have sworn the room just moved, but no one else felt it). One thing that sticks with me to this day, is that the day of the Loma quake I finished a rush job for a client in San Francisco. I should have driven over and delivered it, but instead, and this is really out of character for me, I took the rest of the day off. Had I delivered I would have been on the top deck of the Cypress structure when it went down. Whoever my gaurdian angel is THANKS!!!
